Falanghina

Until the 1980's, Falaghina had been more or less forgotten and did not appear in any of the Campania DOC regulations.  The Beneventan and Flegrean biotypes were considered a single variety of grape.  At the beginning of the 90's, thanks mostly to the efforts of Leonardo Mustilli, an initiative to bring back the variety was commenced and today it is the most renowned and widespread white grape in Campania.  The name of this variety seems to come from its need for support rods, called “falanga” from which we get Falanghina. The bunches are conical-pyramidal with well-developed leaves and of a greenish-yellow colour.  The skin is thick and pruinose.  Ripening varies between the end of September and the beginning of October.  Falanghina produces a straw-yellow wine, well-structured and rather tart in taste, which makes it a white wine suitable for wood ageing.
