Sciascinoso

This is a less widespread vine of Campania, particularly through the provinces of Avellino and Benevento.  Until recently it was thought to be the “Olivella” variety, which shares the same bunch structure and fruit colour but today it has become clear that they are two different types with morphologically distinct characteristics.  The bunches are cylindrical, spargolo and usually leafless.  The oval grapes are medium-large and purple in colour, whilst the skin in quite thin.  The ripening period varies between the end of September and the beginning of October.  The wine it produces is fresh, light and purpley-red in colour with strong aromas of red and black fruits and should be drunk within the year. Denomination of controlled origin (DOC): Sannio Sciascinoso (Benevento), Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio (Naples).
